XIANGGANG DELIGHT

Xianggang Delight is a Chicago-based musical group that has been performing regularly since summer 2001.

Their aim is to synthesize the following two elements: the post-global economic and social theories of Saskia Sassen and the rock group The Who's musical output from 1965.

They employ handouts, choreography and various techniques (such as explosives) to "raise up" the audience; additionally, every song is accompanied by an illustrative video.

The theoretical underpinnings are contained in the document: Mode and Motive in Eleven Bulleted Points

Saskia Sassen

Saskia Sassen, a sociologist at the University of Chicago and the London School of Economics, theorizes the rise of transnational flows of people, commerce, culture and technology. These networks coalesce at various nodes, which she has termed Global Cities, such as London, Chicago, Hong Kong. These global cities engender new social, economic, cultural, political, etc, realities which threaten the hegemony of the nation-state.

Sassen's Transnationalism Project at the University of Chicago contains many relevant links to resources related to contemporary theories of globalization. Of special note is Globalization and World Cities - Study Group & Network, out of the University of Loughborough, Scotland, a site whose nifty maps Xianggang Delight has leaned on heavily over the years for visual aid, inspiration and edification during our darkest hours.

Mess Hall was again a most gracious host to Xianggang Delight. Unlucky Atlas played too.
This was our last show at our monthly breakneck pace. From now on we'll be playing only once every two months.Get up close and personal here.

The Who '65

This English rock group began in earnest in 1965, and quickly developed a musical vocabulary that stressed chaos, seething resentment, pathos and confusion.

The very first Xianggang Delight song to be released as a DVD-single. Which is the more dramatic epic, the song itself or the technical difficulties that arose during the recording of it?
